Traditionaly, a Leap Year has been a time when women can propose marriage to a man. This tradition, said to go back to 5th century Ireland where Brigid of Kildare complained to St Patrick that women had to wait so long for a man to propose. St Patrick suggested women be allowed to propose on the 29th of Febuary - one day in every leap year.
In todays modern time, women can propose at any time without society looking down on them. However, back when the rules of courtship were more formal, women could only propose marriage once evey four years - on February 29.
According to english law, February 29 was ignored and had no legal status. It was reasoned that a leap year existed to fix a calendar problem, that it could also be used to address an unjust custom that only let men propose marriage to women.
Supposedly (but disputed), in a 1288 law by Queen Margaret of Scotland (then aged five), men who refused a proposal of marriage must pay a fine. The fine ranged from a kiss to a £1 to a silk dress.
Some regard this as folk lore with no historical relevance.

Elana and David Glatt have filed a US$400,000 suit against an Upper East Side florist, charging it caused them “extreme disappointment, distress and embarrassment” on what was supposed to be the greatest day of their lives by providing the wrong-colored hydrangeas for their Aug. 11 wedding.
In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, the Glatts and David’s mom, Tobi, charge that Posy Floral Design Studio used cheaper pink hydrangeas instead of the contractually agreed-upon rust hydrangeas, messing up the color scheme of the deluxe wedding at Cipriani 42nd Street.
The flowers cost $27,000. The lawsuit asks for more than $400,000 in restitution and damages.
Posy owners Paula and Stamos Arakas were stunned by the suit. “I can’t believe this. I put my heart and soul into this wedding,” a teary-eyed Paula told The New York Post. Stamos blamed the “completely unwarranted” suit on Glatt’s lawyer bride, Elana, referring to her as a “Bridezilla”.
What do Hydrangeas look like?
Hydrangeas are popular ornamental plants, grown for their large flowerheads, with Hydrangea macrophylla being by far the most widely grown with over 600 named cultivars, many selected to have only large sterile flowers in the flowerheads.

We came across an interesting question asked in Wedding Central’s Forum. Something many brides don’t think about before their wedding day. How do you use the toilet after you have put on your wedding dress?
Hi I thought I might go anon on this one… sorry.Just wondering if any of the other B2B on this site are worried about having to go to the toilet after the dress is all on etc. I have been told by some people to go to the doctor and get a tablet to stop me from going to the toilet during the wedding day. I’m scared about drinking anything on the day as my bladder can be quite weak at times and don’t want to be running to the loo constantly!Has anyone used anything like this (I don’t know if its a diuretic or what) on the day or are you planning to?Thanks girls!
No wonder this forum member decided to post anonymously. Definitely not a subject discussed in polite company.
So, how exactly do you visit the toilet when wearing a full bridal gown with hoop and corset?
Depending on how large your train is and if you will be wearing hoops, you may need the assistance of a bridesmaid to help you. Some reception venues have a bridal suite with larger toilets for brides. Also, the toilets in a bridal suite are generally cleaner because you are not sharing them with hundreds of guests.
Some advice from paast brides in the forum
“… the best advice I can give you is to back your way in if your in a small toilet…get your BM’s or Mum or whoever you trust to get your dress at the back to about your shoulder blades, then carefully back your way in, pull your knickers down and sit …”
“I just had my sister hold my dress up while I peed. That’s what sisters are for.”
“One of the funniest stories from our wedding was me going to the loo!
The first time was just before the ceremony, when we stopped at a park to use the toilets, my fantastic BM came in with me, to help. So she had hold of my dress and I squatted over the loo, but nothing would come… STAGEFRIGHT!!! so whilst holding up my dress she stood on one foot and balanced to reach with other foot, she stretched across to the tap and flicked it on with her foot!!! Andyway the running water did the trick, and we were on our way to the ceremony!
The second time was at the reception and I again got STAGEFRIGHT but we could reach the tap easier!!!
It was so funny, and we still bring it up!”
And probably on of the most creative examples
“… lift the front, sit on the toilet backwards and pee…”

A woman performing weddings as a wedding officiant in Portland, Oregon has been arrested for stealing thousands of dollars in wedding gifts.
The couple had asked for gift cards and registered at Home Depot since they were in the process of remodeling their home.
Police said the couple became concerned after finding very few gift cards after between 75 and 100 guests attended the ceremony, but they didn’t want to appear ungrateful, according to police.
It was only after friends started questioning the couple about how they were spending the gift money that they called police, suspecting possible theft.

Cup cake wedding cakes have been very popular in recent years. They are cool, funky and modern, like todays young brides. They are also something unique that people will remember about the wedding and talk about.
In the US, a trend started and is now spreading across the country. Doughnuts can made in to a pyramid shaped cake and then decorated with anything from icing to ribbons and flowers. Cakes can be multi tiered using stands, pillars or place seperators. Different flavoured doughnuts can be used on each tier. The ideas are endless.
Keeping with the doughnut theme, you can even give out doughnuts as bomboniere or wedding favours. The bonfavs can be easily and stylishly presented and decorated with sugared almonds

Ever wondered what it would be like to walk down the aisle in your very own designer wedding gown?
The National Breast Cancer Foundation ‘Brides for Breast Cancer’ program will allow Australian brides to do just that as Design Ambassadors, Charlie Brown, Nevenka, Camilla Franks, Steven Khalil, Amanda Garrett, Jacqui Alexander and Luci Di Bella come together to support breast cancer research and showcase the unique talents which have elevated them to the forefront of the Australian design industry.
The ‘Brides for Breast Cancer’ program will see each of these designers design and produce one bridal gown which will then be sold through an online auction coinciding with Breast Cancer Month this October.
Design of the gowns is intended to celebrate women and the union of marriage within the unique style of each designer. Bidding for the gowns is open to all Australians and funds raised through the auction will be donated to support high quality research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer in Australian women.
Renowned Australian designer and NBCF supporter Charlie Brown agrees, “I hope this initiative helps more women enjoy their own wedding day, or the wedding day of someone close to them. I’m supporting ‘Brides for Breast Cancer’ because everyone deserves the opportunity to give their special day that extra sparkle!”
To be in the running to bid on one of the six gowns, bidders should register their details at Ebay. The auction begins on 18 October 2007. Further information is available on Ebay’s seller profile page.
Anyone wishing to view the gowns in person may do so throughout the month of October in Melbourne’s Chadstone Shopping Centre.
